Four operations roles

The tracks that run the floor

Each role owns different systems and a different interview focus. Pick the one closest to your background, or explore a few before you commit.

Data Center Technician

Data center technicians do the hands-on work on the floor: racking and stacking servers, running and dressing cables, swapping failed hardware, and acting as remote hands for teams that can't be on site.

NOC Operator

NOC (Network Operations Center) operators are the eyes of the site. They watch dashboards and alerts, triage what matters, open and drive incidents, and coordinate the right people to respond, often across multiple facilities at once.

Critical Facilities Technician

Critical facilities technicians keep the physical environment running: utility feeds, UPS and batteries, generators, switchgear, and the cooling systems that stop equipment from overheating. When these fail, the whole site is at risk.

Network & Cabling Technician

Network and cabling technicians build and maintain the physical layer: structured copper and fiber, patch panels, cross-connects, and the labeling and documentation that keep thousands of connections traceable.

Trades on Site

Trades on a data center build install the systems everyone else will later operate: containment and busway runs, chilled-water pipework, ductwork, cable containment and terminations. The work is ordinary trade work done under extraordinary discipline: permits, inspection points, and evidence for everything.

Contractor / CSA

CSA is the civil, structural and architectural backbone of the build: slabs and structure, walls and roofs, doors and fire barriers, and the thousand penetrations every service needs through them. On a data center the CSA scope finishes first and gets punctured by everyone else, so coordination is the job.

QA/QC Quality Engineer

The QA/QC engineer runs the quality system the whole build answers to: inspection and test plans for every discipline, hold and witness points that stop work until signed, non-conformance reports when reality misses the specification, and the turnover dossier that proves the building was built as designed.

MEP Design Engineer

MEP design engineers shape the electrical and mechanical systems a data center lives or dies by: the power train from utility to rack, the cooling plant and distribution, and the redundancy topology that decides what fails safely. The design idiom is compact: most of it can be read off a one-line diagram, and technical screens expect you to.

Commissioning Engineer

Commissioning engineers prove the facility works before anyone trusts it with load. The work climbs a ladder: factory tests before shipping (L1), inspection on arrival (L2), start-up and pre-functional checks (L3), functional performance tests on each system (L4), and the integrated systems test (L5) where the whole building is failed on purpose and must recover.

Controls / BMS Engineer

Controls engineers make the plant observable and automatic. The building management system (BMS) runs the mechanical side: sequences of operations for chillers, CRAH units and pumps, the points that sense and command them, the graphics and trends operators live in. The electrical power monitoring system (EPMS) does the same for the power train. Design intent becomes day-to-day operability at this desk.
