The role

What the job actually is

Controls engineers make the plant observable and automatic. The building management system (BMS) runs the mechanical side: sequences of operations for chillers, CRAH units and pumps, the points that sense and command them, the graphics and trends operators live in. The electrical power monitoring system (EPMS) does the same for the power train. Design intent becomes day-to-day operability at this desk.

Interviews are technical screens with a practical bent: read this sequence and tell me what happens when the supply temperature rises; what kind of point is a valve command; what do you do when an alarm flood hits at 3am. The role also lives inside commissioning: controls point-to-point checks gate L3, and no functional test at L4 passes without the sequences behaving.

Do I need programming experience to get into controls?

Configuration fluency matters more than software engineering. Teams hire HVAC controls techs, electricians and graduates who can read a sequence and reason about the plant, and train the platform specifics. Showing you understand points, protocols and alarms beats listing languages.

What is the difference between BMS and EPMS?

The BMS automates and monitors the mechanical side, mostly cooling; the EPMS monitors the electrical power train. Same discipline, different plant. Data centers run both, and interviews check you don't blur them.

How involved is controls in commissioning?

Deeply. Point-to-point verification gates L3 start-up, functional performance at L4 is largely a controls exercise, and the L5 integrated systems test fails or passes on how the sequences respond.
