Who designs and validates a data center
MEP Engineer
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers design the systems a data center runs on: the power path, cooling, and the redundancy scheme that hits the availability target. On a fast program they also support constructability and speed-to-power decisions.
Interview focus
- Redundancy topologies (N, N+1, 2N) and the trade-offs behind each.
- Power and cooling capacity, density, and how design margins are set.
- Reading and defending a one-line and a cooling schematic.
- Where design intent hands off to construction and commissioning.
Commissioning (Cx) Engineer
Commissioning proves the facility actually works before it goes live: from factory testing through levels of on-site verification and integrated system tests, ending in a documented, owner-ready handover. It's the discipline that turns a built facility into a trusted one.
Interview focus
- The commissioning levels, from component checks to integrated systems testing.
- Writing and running test scripts, and capturing pass/fail evidence.
- Failure injection, load banks, and validating the redundancy actually holds.
- Issues logs, closeout, and a clean handover to operations.
Controls / BMS / EPMS
Controls engineers make the mechanical and electrical systems observable and automatic: building management (BMS) and electrical power monitoring (EPMS) that alarm, trend, and sequence the plant. It's where design intent becomes day-to-day operability.
Interview focus
- Sequences of operation and how a plant responds to a fault.
- Points lists, alarms, and trends that operations will actually use.
- The BMS/EPMS interface into commissioning and turnover.
- How controls choices shape resilience and human error risk.
