How to read a construction document number and revision code

The code on every drawing, and why the revision tag is the part that decides whether you can build from it.

Look at the title block of any drawing on a data center project and you will find a string like EX1-EL-DWG-000042 and, beside it, a small revision tag like C2. Newcomers read past both. People who get hired read them first, because that string tells you what the document is, and the tag tells you whether you are even allowed to build from it.

You will never memorize one universal format, because every project invents its own. The skill is decomposing whichever convention is in front of you, in seconds.

Anatomy of a document number

Take the invented example EX1-EL-DWG-000042. Read it in segments: PRJ is the project code, which job this belongs to. EL is the discipline, electrical here; mechanical, structural, and architectural each have their own. DWG is the document type, a drawing; others might be SPC for specification or RPT for report. 0042 is the sequence number, the forty-second document of this type in this discipline.

Once you see the segments, an unfamiliar number stops being noise. You can look at a stranger's drawing and say what it is before reading a single line of content. That is the exact move a coordination or CSA interviewer is checking for.

The revision tag is the part that bites

Beside the number sits the revision, and it carries the document's state. A common pattern: preliminary revisions (often a P-series, P1, P2) while a document is still being developed, and contractual revisions (often a C-series or plain numbers, C1, C2) once it has been formally issued. The letters differ project to project; the idea does not: the tag tells you whether this is a draft to comment on or an issued document to build from.

The drill that saves careers: before using any drawing, check its revision against the register. A C2 in your hand when C3 has been issued means you are about to build from a superseded document, and that is how a wall ends up in the wrong place. "Latest one I could find" is not a revision check.

Why this is an interview signal

Being fluent with numbers and revisions signals that you understand the project runs on a controlled record, not on whatever PDF is in someone's inbox. That fluency is assumed from site admin to project manager, and being good with the controlled document environment is a genuine differentiator precisely because so few candidates walk in with it.
