Power questions technicians get asked
Power questions test whether you understand the path electricity takes to a server and where you are allowed to touch it. Interviewers are listening for the boundary between monitoring a system and switching one.
Name the stage you are talking about. A candidate who says "the UPS" when they mean the PDU sounds like someone who has read about a data center rather than stood in one.
Can you walk me through the power path from the utility to the server?
- Why they ask
- It is the fastest way to tell whether you have a mental model of the building or a list of acronyms. Every later power question depends on this one.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Name the stages in order and say what each one does: utility supply into the building, a generator that covers a utility loss, a transfer switch that decides which source feeds the load, a UPS that carries the gap while the generator starts, distribution boards, the rack PDU, and the server power supplies.

- Utility comes into the building's switchgear. If the utility drops, a transfer switch moves the load to generator, but the generator takes time to start and accept load, so the UPS carries that gap on battery. From there it goes through distribution to the rack PDU, and most servers have dual supplies fed from two different paths.

- Starting at the rack and working outward, or naming components with no idea what sits between them. Saying the generator "takes over instantly" misses the entire reason a UPS exists.
What is the difference between N, N+1 and 2N?
- Why they ask
- Redundancy language is used constantly on site, and the interviewer wants to know you can connect a topology to a business decision rather than recite a definition.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Define each level against the load, then attach a reason. N is exactly what the load needs. N+1 adds one spare so any single unit can fail or be serviced with no impact. 2N is a mirrored second set, so an entire path can be lost.
- Model answer
- N is what the load requires with nothing spare. N+1 means one extra unit, so you can lose one or take one out for maintenance and still carry the load. 2N is two complete paths. A site pays for 2N when downtime costs more than the duplicate equipment, and when maintenance has to happen on a live site without ever dropping below N.
- Red flag
- Treating N+1 and 2N as the same idea with different numbers, or defining them without ever mentioning maintenance. Redundancy exists as much for planned work as for failure.
Why do servers have two power supplies?
- Why they ask
- It checks whether you understand that redundancy has to be carried all the way to the load, not just to the room.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Explain that each supply is fed from a different path, so losing one path does not drop the server, and that this is what allows work on one path while the site stays up.
- Model answer
- The two supplies are fed from separate paths, usually an A side and a B side. If a path is lost, whether that is a failure or planned maintenance, the server keeps running on the other one. It only helps if both feeds are genuinely on different paths, which is why cabling discipline matters.
- Red flag
- Saying it is "for more power" or assuming both cords are plugged into the same PDU. The second is a real and common site fault.
What is a PDU and how is it different from a UPS?
- Why they ask
- These two are mixed up constantly, and confusing them in an interview signals you have not worked near either.

- Separate them by function: the UPS provides ride-through power during a source change or interruption, the PDU distributes power to racks and equipment.
- Model answer
- A UPS carries the load through an interruption, mainly the seconds between losing utility and the generator picking up. A PDU distributes power onward. In the rack, the PDU is the strip the server cords plug into, and it often meters what each outlet is drawing.

- Using the two words interchangeably, or claiming a UPS can run the site for hours. Its job is measured in minutes.
What would you do if you noticed a rack drawing close to its limit?
- Why they ask
- It tests whether you recognise a developing problem and route it, rather than either ignoring it or acting outside your authority.

- Verify the reading, check it against the rack's rated limit and what is normal for it, consider whether load has genuinely been added, then escalate before anything is unplugged or moved.
- Model answer
- I would confirm the reading against a second source and check the rack's rated limit and its normal draw. If load has genuinely grown I would raise it with whoever owns capacity, with the numbers, rather than moving equipment myself. Redistributing load changes which path carries what, and that is a decision above my level.
- Red flag
- Unplugging or rebalancing equipment to fix it there and then. It is the correct instinct with the wrong authority.
Cooling and airflow questions
Cooling questions are usually really airflow questions. Interviewers want to know whether you understand that cold air is a resource that leaks, and that most floor-level cooling problems are containment problems.
What is hot aisle and cold aisle containment?
- Why they ask
- It is the organising idea behind data center airflow, and the basis for most of what a technician is asked to keep tidy.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Describe the layout, then the purpose: racks are arranged so intakes face one aisle and exhausts the other, keeping supply air and return air from mixing.
- Model answer
- Racks are arranged so all the equipment intakes face one aisle and all the exhausts face the other. The cold aisle gets the supply air, the hot aisle collects exhaust and returns it. Containment puts a physical barrier around one of them so the two do not mix, because mixing means the cooling system works harder to deliver the same result at the intake.
- Red flag
- Describing it as "keeping the room cold". The target is the temperature at the equipment intake, not the room average.
What is a blanking panel and why does it matter?
- Why they ask
- It is a small thing that reveals whether you have actually worked a floor. Missing blanking panels are one of the most common real faults.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Say what it physically does, then the consequence of leaving it out.
- Model answer
- A blanking panel fills an empty rack slot so air cannot take a short cut through the gap. Without it, hot exhaust air recirculates straight back to the equipment intakes above and below. The rack then reads hot even though the cooling system is delivering what it should.
- Red flag
- Calling it cosmetic, or not knowing the term. It is the cheapest airflow fix on the floor.
What would you check first if a rack alarms for high temperature?
- Why they ask
- The classic technician scenario. It tests ordered thinking and, more importantly, where you stop.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Confirm the alarm is real from a second source, look for an obvious airflow cause you are authorised to correct, verify the affected equipment, then escalate with findings rather than opening anything.
- Model answer
- First I would confirm it is real rather than one bad sensor, by checking a second source. Then I would look for an airflow cause I am allowed to fix: a missing blanking panel, a moved floor tile, something blocking a perforated tile, a door left open on a contained aisle. I would check what the affected equipment is actually reporting, and escalate with what I had found.
- Red flag
- Going straight to cooling setpoints. Changing a setpoint to silence an alarm treats the symptom and is almost never a technician's call.
Why do floor tiles and cable openings matter for cooling?
- Why they ask
- It checks whether you connect your own daily habits to the cooling result.

- Explain that under-floor supply is a pressurised volume, so every unsealed opening leaks air where it does no work.
- Model answer
- Where air is supplied under the floor, that void is pressurised, and air escapes through whatever opening it finds. An unsealed cable cut-out or a perforated tile in the wrong aisle leaks supply air somewhere it does not cool anything. That is why openings get sealed and why tiles are not moved casually.
- Red flag
- Treating a floor tile as furniture. Moving one changes where the air goes, so it is a controlled change.
What is the difference between temperature and humidity control, and why do both matter?
- Why they ask
- Humidity is the half most candidates forget, and it separates people who have read a spec from people who have not.

- Give the risk at each extreme without overclaiming precise thresholds.

- Temperature is about keeping intake air inside the range the equipment is rated for. Humidity matters at both ends: too dry raises static discharge risk when handling equipment, too damp risks condensation on cold surfaces. Both are controlled to a band, and the exact band comes from the site's own design.

- Quoting exact percentages with total confidence. Ranges vary by site and by which standard the design followed, and a confident wrong number is worse than a stated range.
Safety, LOTO and authorization questions
This group decides most technician interviews. Employers running critical facilities cannot afford somebody who improvises, so they probe the edge of your authority deliberately and then push on it.
The winning instinct is the same every time: say what you can safely do, name what you cannot, and route the rest. Framing it as protecting the site, not as refusing work, is what separates a confident answer from a defensive one.
What is LOTO and when does it apply?
- Why they ask
- Lockout/tagout is the core safety procedure around energised equipment, and any answer that treats it loosely ends the interview.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Describe it as a controlled process for isolating an energy source and proving it is isolated, with the person doing the work holding the lock.
- Model answer
- Lockout/tagout is how an energy source is isolated and kept isolated while work happens. The isolation is physically locked, tagged with who applied it and why, and verified as dead before work starts. The person doing the work holds their own lock, so nobody else can re-energise it. It applies to any work where unexpected energisation could hurt someone.
- Red flag
- Describing it as "putting a tag on it", or suggesting one person can remove another person's lock. That is the exact failure the procedure exists to prevent.
You are asked to do a task that is not in your training or your runbook. What do you do?
- Why they ask
- The single most predictive technician question. It tests judgment about scope under mild social pressure.

- Do not improvise on live infrastructure. State what you can safely do, name what you cannot, escalate to whoever owns the task or the authorisation, and frame it around site risk.

- "I'd figure it out." Also any answer where finishing the task outranks the site's safety.
The shift lead tells you to just do it, it is fine. Now what?
- Why they ask
- The follow-up probe. The first answer is easy to rehearse, and this one shows whether you meant it.

- Hold the position without making it a confrontation. Ask for the authorisation to come from whoever can actually give it, and put it in writing.
- Model answer
- I would not do it on a verbal go-ahead. I would ask for the authorisation from whoever owns it, and note the request and the answer in the ticket. If it is genuinely fine, that takes a few minutes to confirm. If it is not, those few minutes are the reason nothing happened.
- Red flag
- Folding under pressure, or the opposite: a rigid answer that turns a solvable situation into a standoff. Escalating is not the same as refusing.
What would you not touch on the data center floor, and how do you know?
- Why they ask
- It tests whether you know where your authority ends and how you find that out on an unfamiliar site.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Anything you are not trained and authorised for, anything live not isolated under the correct procedure, and anything under a permit or lock you do not hold. You know from training, the runbook, the labelling, and by asking.

What PPE would you expect to use, and who decides?
- Why they ask
- It checks that you treat PPE as task-driven rather than a uniform, and that you know it is specified rather than chosen.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Say that it depends on the task and the assessed risk, that the site's risk assessment and procedure specify it, and give plausible examples without overclaiming.
- Model answer
- It depends on the task and what the risk assessment for it says. Basic floor work is different from anything near energised electrical equipment, which carries its own requirements. I would follow what the site's procedure and permit specify, and I would not start a task if the specified PPE was not available.
- Red flag
- Listing gear as a personal preference, or implying you would proceed without the specified equipment because the job is quick.
Monitoring, ticketing and documentation questions
Documentation questions are not administrative filler. The next person acts on your record, and in a 24-hour operation that person is a stranger working at 3am.
Interviewers read clean records as reliability, so answers that treat paperwork as a chore score badly even when the technical content is right.
What makes a good ticket?

- It is a direct test of whether you write for the next person or for yourself.

- State that it must be actionable by someone who was not there: what you observed, what you did, what you did not do and why, and what is still open.
- Model answer
- It says what I observed, what I did, what I deliberately did not do and why, and what is still open. It is specific and time-stamped, and it is readable by someone who was not there. If someone picks it up cold at 3am, they should not have to call me.
- Red flag
- "Fixed it" as a closing note. It records that something happened and nothing about what.
You ran out of time mid-task. What must the ticket say?
- Why they ask
- Half-finished work is where handover failures actually happen, and this shows whether you will hide an open item.
- What a scoring answer covers
- State the current physical state of the equipment, exactly what is incomplete, anything left isolated or removed, and what the next person must do first.
- Model answer
- It has to say what state the equipment is in right now, what is incomplete, and anything I left isolated, disconnected or removed. Then what the next person should do first. The worst version is a ticket that reads as finished when something is still open.
- Red flag
- Anything that makes an incomplete task look complete, including closing it with the intention of finishing later.
How do you know an alarm is real?
- Why they ask
- It tests whether you verify before acting, which is the habit that prevents most unnecessary interventions.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Corroborate from an independent source, check whether related equipment agrees, and look at history for whether this alarm is known.
- Model answer
- I would look for a second, independent indication rather than trusting one sensor. If nearby equipment shows nothing consistent with it, that points at the sensor. I would also check ticket history, because a repeating alarm on the same point is a known fault until proven otherwise.
- Red flag
- Either extreme: acting on every alarm without checking, or dismissing alarms as false because they usually are.
What is a runbook and how would you use one?
- Why they ask
- It checks whether you can follow a documented procedure and, importantly, what you do when it does not match reality.

- Describe it as the approved procedure for a known task, followed as written, with any mismatch raised rather than improvised around.
- Model answer
- A runbook is the approved procedure for a known task, so I follow it as written rather than from memory. If what I find on the floor does not match what the runbook describes, I stop and raise it. A runbook that is out of date is itself a finding worth reporting.

- Saying you would adapt it on the spot to make it fit. Silently working around a mismatch is how a documented procedure becomes fiction.
How do you hand over at the end of a shift?
- Why they ask
- Continuity is the whole point of shift work, and handover is where it succeeds or fails.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Cover what is open, what changed, what needs watching, and anything left in a non-standard state, verbally and in the record.
- Model answer
- I go through what is still open, what changed during the shift, and anything that needs watching. Anything left in a non-standard state gets called out explicitly. I do it in the written record as well as verbally, because the verbal version is the one that gets forgotten.
- Red flag
- Relying on a conversation alone, or handing over only the problems you personally found interesting.
Scenario and behavioural questions
Scenario questions are where the earlier answers get tested under pressure. The interviewer is not looking for the fix; they are looking for the sequence you run before you touch anything.
A rack loses power on your shift. Walk me through it.
- Why they ask
- The classic end-to-end scenario. It shows whether the discipline from the other questions holds when something is actually wrong.
- What a scoring answer covers
- Confirm scope, keep to safe action, verify against monitoring and tickets, escalate the parts you do not own, document throughout.
- Model answer
- First, scope: is it one device, one rack, one PDU, or wider? That changes who needs to know immediately. I would check monitoring and recent tickets for anything related, and look for an obvious physical cause I am authorised to check, like a tripped rack PDU breaker. I would not switch power upstream. I would escalate to whoever owns that and document what I saw and did as I went.
- Red flag
- Starting with a fix. Also restoring power before anyone understands why it was lost, which can walk straight back into the fault.
You find a cable that is mislabelled. What do you do?
- Why they ask
- Small, realistic, and it tests whether you correct records or quietly work around them.

- Do not act on the label or silently relabel it. Verify what it actually is through an authorised method, raise it, and get the record corrected.
- Model answer
- I would not trust the label or quietly change it, because a wrong label that looks confident is more dangerous than an obviously missing one. I would verify what it actually connects to through an approved method, raise it so the record gets corrected, and flag anything that might have been done on the strength of the wrong label.

- Relabelling it yourself based on what you assume it is. That converts a known unknown into a confident error.
You disagree with how a colleague did something. How do you handle it?
- Why they ask
- Behavioural, but with a safety edge. Interviewers want to know you will raise a real problem without making the floor hostile.

- Separate immediate safety from process improvement. Safety gets raised now; everything else goes through the normal route, directly and without an audience.
- Model answer
- If it is an immediate safety issue I raise it straight away, because that cannot wait for a good moment. If it is a difference in method, I would ask them about it first, since they may know something about the site that I do not. If it still looks wrong, I raise it through the normal route rather than working around it.
- Red flag
- Either avoiding it entirely or escalating everything over people's heads. Both make you hard to work a shift with.
Tell me about a time you made a mistake.
- Why they ask
- In a critical environment, the ability to report your own error quickly matters more than never making one.
- What a scoring answer covers
- A real, contained example: what happened, how it was caught, what you did immediately, and what you changed afterwards.
- Model answer
- Give a real one, then say how it was found, whether you reported it yourself, what the immediate containment was, and what you changed so it could not repeat. The reporting is the part they are listening for.

- "I can't think of one," or a disguised humblebrag. Both read as someone who would hide the next one.
Why do you want to work in a data center?
- Why they ask
- It filters people who applied to a building from people who understand the work is procedural, shift-based, and consequential.

- Connect a genuine motivation to the actual conditions of the job, including shifts and procedure, and to something you have already done about it.
- Model answer
- Be specific about the work rather than the industry. Something like: the work is procedural and the consequences are real, which suits how I like to operate; I am comfortable with shift patterns; and here is what I have already done to prepare for it.
- Red flag
- Answers about growth of the sector or the size of the buildings. They say nothing about whether you will be good on a night shift.
What a technician interview is really testing

How hard is it to get a data center technician job with no experience?
It is one of the more accessible routes into the sector, because employers hire for behaviour and train the specifics. Electrical, HVAC, military, maintenance and IT support backgrounds all transfer.
What blocks candidates is rarely the technical gap. It is interviewing as though the job is about fixing things, when it is about operating safely inside a procedure.
- Transferable evidence beats claimed knowledge: shift work, permits, safety procedure, documented maintenance.
- Say what you have not done. Overclaiming is the fastest way to fail a follow-up probe.

Do data center technicians work nights?
Most operational sites are staffed around the clock, so technician roles commonly involve shifts, nights and weekends. Rotation patterns differ by site and by employer.
Interviewers ask about this directly because unrealistic expectations about hours are a common early leaver. Answer honestly. If you have done shift work before, say so, because it is genuine evidence.

- "I'd restart things and see what happens", which is improvising instead of verifying.
